Served in Viet-Nam from Aug 1965 to Sept 1966 with Co. A, 82nd Aviation Battalion as a door gunner on UH-1B gunships call sign FALCONS, we were first stationed in Vung-Tau, approximately four to six weeks later we moved to Bien Hoa to support the 173rd Airborne Brigade. Our lift platoons call sign were the COWBOYS. I departed Viet-Nam (Sept 1966) before the unit changed to the 335th Assault Helicopter Company.
Prior to Viet Nam, I was assigned to Co. C, 65th Engineer Battalion (MOS 12B20), later I volunteered for Shotgun (Door Gunner) School. Apparently there were two SHOTGUN XI, one was Detachment #8, Letter Orders 08-144 (1st Bn 35th Inf), and the second, which I was assigned to, was Detachment #11, Letter Orders 08-138 (65th Engr Bn). Both orders were dated 27 August 1965.

It's been interesting, reading things on here! I think my dad was part of the 145th CAB, as he gave me his copy of the Pictorial History II that was done up. Looks good!

I've talked to him about going to one reunion or another, who knows what'll happen in the future. In the meantime, if anyone has any stories or pictures of John Maxfield Jr, I'd love to hear them. Feel free to e-mail me at the address above and lets connect!

You guys are doing a great service by having this web site. It really helps to educate the younger generation about it and what happened over there.

Gentlemen, the following request is for a future Army aviation history publication. Question: who among you during your Vietnam tour-of-duty recall seeing/crewing/piloting an in-country Army helicopter which exhibited on its fuselage a "personalized painted name" like, for example, IRON BUTTERFLY and SUSIE Q? Thank you, John Brennan, johnmailman2@yahoo.com, former SP5, 114 AHC, 1970-71, Vinh Long AAF, Mekong Delta

I was Spartan 13-190th AHC- in 1969 and early 1970. I have been to a couple of reunions at Fort Rucker and they were great. Hope to see some "old friends" at the next one.

Served for a short time with HQs 145th in 1969. Great job. Would let me fly said because I was a buck sergeant. I re-enlisted and returned to my old Cav squadron. It all worked out. And really enjoyed my short time in 145th
